对联 duìlián noun antithetical couplet 对联An antithetical couplet pasted or hung on doors, pillars or walls. The couplet is written vertically, and conventions are observed regarding the number of characters it contains, as well as the tonal pattern used. Couplets, known as chunlian (春联), are most commonly seen at Spring Festival. Elegiac couplets mourn the dead. Couplets can also be found at famous beauty spots. |
