The middle of the board, where there are no lines, is called the ‘border river’. The squares where there are diagonally crossed lines are known as jiugong (九宫). There are 16 red and 16 black pieces. These pieces include the general (将 or 帅), two advisors (士 or 仕), two elephants (象 or 相), two chariots (车), two horses (马), two cannons (炮) and five soldiers (卒 or 兵). Red makes the first move, after which the players take turns to move their pieces. If one player attacks the other player's general, then in the next move the player can wipe the opponent off the board. This is known as 将军 or 将 (‘check’). If the other player cannot defend the general, the game is over. If neither side can annihilate each other's generals, then the game results in a draw. |
