| 释义 | 评弹 pínɡtán noun （指曲艺） pingtan [form of storytelling and ballad singing in Suzhou dialect] 评弹A term that combines pinghua (评话, storytelling) and tanci (弹词, storytelling accompanied by stringed instruments) in local Suzhou dialect. In pinghua a performer holding a folding fan and a storyteller’s gavel tells a long story. The pinghua repertoire of more than 50 pieces includes The Romance of the Three Kingdoms (→ 《三国演义》) and The Water Margin (→ 《水浒传》). In tanci, while speaking is the most important feature, there is also singing. The musical instruments used for tanci include the sanxian (三弦, a three-stringed plucked instrument) and the pipa (琵琶, an instrument similar to a lute). The libretto mostly consists of seven words in a line. Tanci is usually performed by two people, though occasionally there may be one or three. Pingtan can also refer to a performance which is a mixture of the two forms. |
