The story of Tang Seng is based on real events. In 603 AD the Tang Dynasty monk, Xuan Zang, travelled from Chang’an (present-day Xi'an) to India, in order to obtain a fuller understanding of Buddhist doctrine. After an arduous journey, he returned with over 600 volumes of Buddhist texts. The four characters in the story are Tang Seng, Sun Wukong (Monkey), Zhu Bajie (Pigsy) and Sha Seng (Friar Sand). On the way to the west these characters vanquish numerous demons and monsters, encounter 81 trials and difficulties, before finally returning with the scriptures. |
