They are believed to have originated in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province. The story goes that in the Southern Song Dynasty, the famous General Yue Fei (岳飞) was falsely accused by the treacherous and universally hated Qin Hui (秦桧), and sentenced to death. One small restaurant made long strips of dough to represent Qin Hui and his wife. These were then fried and eaten. To this day, an untrustworthy person is colloquially known as a youtiao. |
