科举 kējǔ noun imperial civil examination 科举Examinations held at county, provincial and central levels, and used as the basis for selecting officials for appointment into the imperial bureaucracy. Founded in the Sui Dynasty, the system lasted until its abolition in 1905 at the end of the Qing Dynasty. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, the Eight-Part Essay (→ 八股文) formed an important part of the examination. |
