词汇 | 铜钱 |
释义 | 铜钱 tónɡqián noun copper coin 铜钱Copper coins were already being produced at the end of the Spring and Autumn period. From the Qin to the Qing dynasties, most of the coins were round with a square hole in the middle. This is why money in China is sometimes humorously referred to as kongfangxiong (孔方兄, literally ‘a brother with a square hole’). Being of low value, coins were usually strung together to create higher denominations. Because of the inscriptions on the reverse side, each coin was known as a ‘wen’(文, meaning ‘word’), and this gave rise to expressions such as ‘bu ming yi wen’(不名一文, ‘penniless’). Coins without holes were introduced at the end of the Qing Dynasty and were known as tongyuan (铜元) or tongban (铜板). |
