麒麟 qílín noun kylin [mythical chimerical creature] 麒麟A mythological beast with the shape of a deer, the tail of an ox, a single horn, and scales all over its body. The kylin is regarded as a propitious symbol, and together with the dragon, phoenix and turtle, is one of the four spirits (四灵) of ancient times. It was traditionally believed that the kylin would bring offspring, and a common depiction in Chinese folklore is of the kylin bringing a child to a woman. |
