词汇 义和团
释义
义和团 Yìhétuán noun Boxers 义和团运动 Boxer Uprising 义和团Chinese grass-roots movement at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century. Originally known as 义和拳, the Boxers were a secret organization based in Shandong, Zhili (roughly present-day Hebei), and other places. They were later enlisted by the Qing government, and their name changed to 义和团. Their slogan was ‘fu Qing mie yang’(扶清灭洋, ‘support the Qing and annihilate the Westerners’). Most of the Boxers were peasants and craftsmen. They were highly superstitious, believing that they were immune to swords and bullets. In 1900, the Eight-Power Allied Forces invaded China, and were resisted by the Boxers and Qing troops. The Boxer movement failed because of their inadequate strength, and because they were outlawed by the Qing government.
