These are, in order, the rat (鼠), ox (牛), tiger (虎), rabbit (兔), dragon (龙), snake (蛇), horse (马), sheep (羊), monkey (猴), rooster (鸡), dog (狗) and pig (猪). Therefore, people born in the 子 year have the rat as their animal. The birth year, known as the ‘benmingnian’(本命年), returns in a twelve-year cycle. Each animal has a particular character, and it is believed that personality traits are determined by one’s birth year. |
