The custom of hanging lanterns may have started in the Eastern Han Dynasty (AD 25-220), when the Emperor Mingdi ordered people to hang lanterns in their houses in honour of the Buddha. Dancing the yangge dance (扭秧歌), walking on stilts, and dragon and lion dances are all traditional activities associated with this festival. Tangyuan (→ 汤圆) are eaten at this time to symbolize family unity and well-being. |
