春节 Chūnjié noun Spring Festival ▸ 欢度春节 celebrate Spring Festival 春节The first day of the lunar New Year, the most important festival in the Chinese calendar and also the nine days that follow. Celebrations begin a week before the eve of the New Year. The 24th day of the 12th month of the year (or the 23rd in northern China) is celebrated as the ‘small year’(小年). This is the day on which the Kitchen God (灶王爷) returns to heaven to report on the family activities. New Year's Eve (除夕) is often known as the ‘big year’(大年三十), the time when the family reunites for a celebratory meal (→ 年夜饭). The 15th day of the new lunar month is the Lantern Festival (→ 元宵节), and is the concluding period of the Spring Festival activities. |
