It has its origins in the knight-errant stories found in Sima Qian's Records of the Grand Historian (《史记》). The genre developed in maturity from the supernatural stories of the Wei-Jin and Six dynasties periods to the short stories of the Tang Dynasty. After the Song Dynasty, vernacular forms began to emerge, and by the end of the Yuan Dynasty and the beginning of the Ming, longer stories in the vernacular were beginning to appear. These included The Water Margin (→ 《水浒传》). The genre reached its height in the Qing Dynasty. Today, knight-errant fiction is found mostly in the works of Hong Kong and Taiwanese writers. Stories typically feature martial arts, military prowess, weaponry, and a spirit of chivalry that embodies a strong sense of social justice. |
