Vocational, adult, and special education are also provided. Children usually go to kindergarten at about the age of three. Compulsory education starts at six or seven, and lasts nine years. This includes six years at primary school, and three years at junior high school, the first stage of secondary education. When compulsory education is completed, school leavers may go to vocational and technical schools. However, most will continue to senior high school, where they will study for a further three years. At the end of this time they will take the highly competitive college entrance examination (→ 高考). Higher education institutions consist mainly of colleges and universities. Typically, it takes four years to get a Bachelor’s degree, three years to get a Master’s and another three years to get a PhD. |
