| 释义 | 敦煌 Dūnhuánɡ noun Dunhuang ▸ 敦煌壁画 Dunhuang murals ▸ 敦煌石窟 Dunhuang Grottoes 敦煌石窟Buddhist grottoes in the Dunhuang region of Gansu Province, and, more specifically, the Mogao Grottoes, located on Mingsha Mountain to the south-east of the city of Dunhuang, a strategic point along the ancient Silk Road (→ 丝绸之路). Dating from 366, today's Mogao grottoes include 492 caves, containing over 3,000 painted statues and murals. The grottoes cover an area of 450 sq m. The murals depict images of Buddha, stories from Buddhist scriptures, and Buddhist historical events and myths. In 1900, a sealed cave was opened up, and it was found to contain a vast number of scriptures, secular texts, and other historical objects. |
