| 释义 | 文化大革命 Wénhuà Dàɡémìnɡ noun ‘Great Cultural Revolution’ [1966-1976] 文化大革命A political movement launched by Mao Zedong from 1966-76 in order to ‘purify’Chinese Communism, and to strengthen his own political and ideological position. The full name is the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution (“无产阶级文化大革命”), often shortened to “文革”. The period, sometimes referred to today as the ‘ten years of chaos’(十年动乱), was characterized by the violent activities of the Red Guards (红卫兵), the enforced displacement of educated people to rural areas, and social and economic turmoil. The Gang of Four (“四人帮”), a radical faction led by Mao's wife, Jiang Qing, played a key role in directing the excesses of the Cultural Revolution. Its members were arrested and sentenced in 1976. |
