Percussion instruments are the drum, gong and cymbals. The acting involves a combination of singing, recitation, and movement, as well as many invented and formulaic movements. Characters are divided into sheng (male), dan (female), jing (aggressive and fierce male, also known as hualian), and chou (male and female clowns). Performers paint their faces using fixed designs and colours. This is particularly the case for the jing. Known as lianpu (脸谱), this type of make-up reflects the personality and moral stature of the character. For example, red always indicates bravery and loyalty, while white indicates treachery. |
